Coosaw Star Info (updated Feb, 2009)

Coosaw Star is 27' LOA, 25'8" LwL, 8'3" Beam and 24" Draft. Original hull design and construction by Gary L Kelley. Hull shape is similiar to a Core Sounder of the Core Sound area of North Carolina, characterized by a mostly flat bottom (slightly curved), low sides and round stern.

The sail plan is not finalized at this time (2-2009), but considerations are: gaff with bowsprit and foresail, cat rig with gaff, lateen or skipjack with gaff rig.

The hull is constructed of 2x6x24' spruce lumber, air dried for 16 months inside the shop. Each piece of lumber is milled to 1 3/8" and sawn with a 1° bevel on each edge for necessary curvature from side to side, end to end. The planks are joined with wood biscuits and epoxy. The hull sides are 2 layers of 1/2" plywood fastened with bronze screws and epoxy. Adjoining edges are dressed with roundover and cove shapes to insure a tight fit. Hull sides are joined at the chine log with bronze screws and epoxy, fiberglass and epoxy, and after that the entire hull is covered with fiberglass and epoxy.

This craft is designed with twin keels. Each keel contains 25 linear feet of 4" pvc plumbing for fresh water storage and conccrete for ballast. Together the keels will provide nearly 800 pounds of ballast. Coosaw Star is designed for shoal draft conditions (skinny water), and easy beaching when desired. The cockpit is provided with a drain and is self bailing. The power unit for Coosaw Star is a 14.5 horsepower Briggs and Stratton air cooled engine mounted on a Sea King outboard tailpiece (see picture). The propulsion unit will be mounted on the bottom (with zincs in place), near the stern with the rudder directly behind the propeller.

Most all the hardware on Coosaw Star will be bronze, brass or copper. There will be a lot of polishing with these materials, but they are very pleasing to the eye when viewed with naturally finished woods like mahogany, cedar, cherry and walnut. These woods will be used in finishing the interior and exterior.
